7. Mental Health Supports
Mental health supports, including psychology, psychiatry and other supports similarly focused on promoting positive mental wellbeing came in at number 7 for our most searched NDIS supports of 2016. Inclusion of mental health related disability in the the NDIS was added after the scheme’s initial design. This may contribute to the challenges faced by people with mental health related disabilities in accessing the NDIS. In trial sites it was found that people listing their primary disability as mental health related had a higher rejection rate compared to other people applying to the scheme.
In spite of these challenges, mental health supports continue to be a key area of need for many in the NDIS community. This can be seen here with mental health supports ranking as the 7th most searched for NDIS support in 2016.
