The National Disability Insurance Scheme is national again. After trialling both the Federal scheme and it’s own flavour, WA had previously decided to go it’s own way with the WANDIS or Western Australian National Disability Insurance Scheme. With a change of government, the West Australian State government has now agreed with the Federal government to join the NDIS.

What happens to everyone on WANDIS now?

The governments intend to transition everyone who is currently participating in WANDIS over to the NDIS in 2018. In classic government speak, the NDIS has announced people will move over in a phased approach from April through to December of 2018. In practice, this means your new years resolution should be ‘patience with redtape’ or ‘improve my dealing with government skills’.

The NDIA is also seeking to improve it’s score on making huge changes in July, with WA delivery responsibility transferring to the Agency in July 2018. Fingers crossed this goes better than the myplace launch

…and this not at all politicised welcome from the minister

What this means for the future

Overall, it is fantastic to have a unified system. This means one system for every Australian. Should you want or need to move from one side of the country to the other, you can and you won’t have to learn a whole new system.

In the short term, there will no doubt be some teething issues. Switching from the State run system over to the federal NDIA is likely to be a little bumpy based on the Agency’s past performance.

In the long term, this is a major victory for all Australians. Welcome to the NDIS, WA, whether under WANDIS or NDIS you’ll continue to be able to find the best care providers in your community here on CareNavigator.com ❤️
